Why do I need to thoroughly cleanse my face and pores with a facial skin care product?
The skin's natural moisturizer (sebum & perspiration) is very beneficial to the skin, however, in time, it oxidizes on the surface of the skin, becomes sticky, changes color and can even produce an odour. As the natural moisturizer becomes sticky, it can attract airborne impurities and pollutants. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly cleanse your face each day with a product that is natural to the skin.
What does it mean to thoroughly cleanse my face?
To thoroughly cleanse your face means to remove all oil-based and water-based impurities from the skin.
How do I know if my face is thoroughly cleansed? What types of facial skin care products should I use?
Generally, if you first start with a cream cleanser and massage your skin, effective removal of all oil-based impurities such as sebum, makeup, and air pollutants will result. This should be followed with a water soluble cleanser to remove all water-based impurities such as perspiration, dust, and airborne materials. If these two steps were followed, you can be assured that thorough cleansing has been achieved.
Why won't a skin care product that contains mineral oil thoroughly cleanse my face and pores?
Mineral oil is an inexpensive material that is derived from crude oil. Since by chemical nature it is very different than the components of skin sebum, it cannot intermix and suspend oil-based impurities on the skin. Since mineral oil cannot suspend oil-based impurities efficiently, some residual impurities are left on the skin.
Why won't a skin care product with mineral oil hydrate or moisturize my face? (or will it?)
A facial skin care product with mineral oil will hydrate and moisturize your face, however, it will not allow the skin to breathe as efficiently as a skin care product that is formulated to be compatible with the skin's natural moisturizer. Mineral oil is occlusive, meaning that it is almost like applying plastic wrap around your face. Moisture is held in, however, adequate breathing will be compromised.
Is a natural skin care regimen recommended when using Renova (Retin A)?
The prescribing information that is provided to physicians recommends that "Renova should only be used as an adjunct to a comprehensive skin care and sun avoidance program."
Why do I need to use a balancing lotion/toner?
A balancing toner helps close the skin's pores and restores the skin's natural pH after being cleansed with an alkaline foaming cleanser. It is important to restore the natural pH to the skin, since this provides natural chemical buffering and bacteriostatic properties. Additionally, if you are using alpha hydroxy acid products, it is particularly important to restore the natural pH to the skin with a balancing lotion, to assure effectiveness of the alpha hydroxy acids.
What will a mask do for me?
Regular masking will help remove dull looking dead skin cells and imbedded impurities to reveal smoother, more translucent skin. Masking also helps to unclog pores and allows for effective ingredients to be more beneficial to your skin.
If my skin is oily should I use a moisturizer? They usually make me break out and make my skin too oily. What should I use?
It is recommended that a light moisturizer designed for oily skin be used. Although your skin is oily, this condition is more noticed in the T-zone area of the face. Areas outside of the T-zone could become dry and may benefit from a light moisturizer.
What types of moisturizers work best? What should I avoid?
The best type moisturizers are those that use quality ingredients
that are natural to the skin. Natural to the skin means ingredients that
replicate the components of the skin's natural moisturizer [sebum (oil)+
perspiration (water)].

film to reduce water evaporation; to provide protection against
de-fatting substances; and to help prevent bacterial infection. Quality
ingredients that are compatible with the skin's natural moisturizer
include squalane, stearic acid, beeswax, jojoba oil, cholesterol,
ceramides, and sodium PCA.
Ingredients to avoid would be mineral oil, synthetic emulsifiers, and
artificial colors.
